Favourite Thing Friday

My favourite thing today is my mom.

My mom is generous, thoughtful, kind, talented, funny, and just plain great.

My mom sets the highest benchmark possible when it comes to her roles and how she performs them: wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend.  She is who I should be.  She is a much better cook, housekeeper, helpmate and mother than anyone I know.

at my dad's 60th birthday party!

My mom attends our kids school functions, sporting events, and plans fun things for us to do together.  We've visited Mt Vernon, historic Philadelphia, Knoebels, and Florida together.  We've gone sledding, hiking, biking, and tubing together.

My mom will come to our house and help me do laundry, clean up my kitchen, and helped me dispose of beef barley soup that's been sitting, covered, on the counter for a week (don't ask).  She always helps me with my cooking jobs and is more than willing to just do dishes.

My mom is endearingly geeky.  Here are some of her more famous quotes: "That guy is an idiot, I don't like to use that word very often, but he just is".  (at a famous burger joint) "I'll have the broiled flounder".  "Gee, whiz, I don't know if we should do that, girls".

My mom makes our kids Halloween costumes every year.

She lets the kids decorate her tree every year, even though all of the ornaments are four feet and lower and usually all on one side.

She took my sister and I on a vacation for her 60th birthday.

She's a hard worker.  She volunteers at two different organizations.  She mobilizes my kids to help others.  She takes them to do work at my Nanny's house - cleaning out gutters, raking leaves, and weeding.  She helps the kids put together shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse every year.

She's so great that she'll probably be upset that I singled her out.  I'm sure she'll remark, "what about your dad and Rob's parents"?  And my response to that - I singled you out because you're my mom and that's special, not just because of that title, but because you're you.  I love you, Mom!

  3. What a wonderful post. If your mom gives you grief over singleing her out, just remind her that it's the return on her investment. Sometimes I think our moms forget how much they've done and what it means. Thanks for sharing.

Oh and Kirsten- your Mom has had years to perfect her Mom-ness. I know you're well on the way to one of your kids doing a post about you that sounds a lot like this one day in the future.

This was a beautiful post K. Thanks for introducing your Mom for FTF.
